Apprentice Plumber Wins Best Student Award
Strategic Team Group apprentice and North Glasgow College student, 19 year Craig Hammond of Cumbernauld scooped the college’s Apprentice of the Year Award in Plumbing, at the college’s annual prize giving ceremony held on Friday 25 June 2010 at Glasgow City Chambers.
Second year SNVQ Level 3 Plumbing student, Craig, was chosen from his year group for his commitment, positive attitude, ability and skill level. As well as a certificate, Craig also received a £50 voucher from the Scottish & Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation.
Craig has been working as an apprentice for Glasgow based building contractors, Strategic Team Group, for the last three and a half years and is mentored by accomplished plumber, 46 year old Kenny Latta. Studying one week every month, Craig recently completed one of Strategic Team Group’s refurbishment projects in Clydebank, Glasgow where he installed several new kitchens to Caspian House, a major refurbishment of an office block, on behalf of Scottish Natural Heritage.
Craig recently represented the college in a national Scottish & Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation’s Skill Plumb competition earlier this month.

Commenting on his award win, Craig Hammond said:
“I really enjoy my apprenticeship, it’s a great way to learn as you study the theory in class and then get the practical experience in the workplace. I’ve also had a great mentor, Kenny, who has guided me and encouraged me all the way. Winning the award has really encouraged me to pursue my career and do well.”
Strategic Team Group Scotland director, Stuart Mason added:
“We would like to congratulate Craig on his award, which is thoroughly deserved. He has impressed us all with his determination and drive and is already a valued member of our site team. As a business we strive for excellence and Craig is clearly on his way to achieving that.
“We have several apprentices operating on our sites in Scotland, funded by Construction & Industry Training Board, and we see very real benefits in encouraging and supporting young talent which forms a crucial part of our development. In fact, we have had a lot of success in retaining and promoting former apprentices who have moved on to become excellent, fully skilled tradesmen and site managers.”
North Glasgow College plumbing course tutor, Sam Thomson said:
“Craig has excelled in his course work and is proving to be a very competent and skilled plumber. We are extremely proud of his achievements and hope he continues to reach new heights.”
North Glasgow College’s awards scheme aims to recognise and celebrate the best apprentice and build talent. Craig was one of several award winners on the night from within the construction department, other categories included brickwork, carpentry and joinery and electricals.
