A three-day challenge at Tang Hall Primary and Applefields Special School in York saw 90 volunteers from schools, colleges, the University of York and businesses across York take part in ‘York Cares Community Challenge’.  As part of the project, Castleford based building contractor, Strategic Team Group, donated a giant wooden storytellers chair and a giant bird feeder flower, collectively worth over £1,600.00.

The ‘Ground Force’ style makeover to the outdoor educational and recreational areas at each school saw the youth arm of York Cares, the employee volunteering charity, team up with Northern Rail, the UK’s largest train operator and Strategic Team Group client, plus other businesses from York, to improve the outdoor areas at both schools.

Sensory stimulation has been proven to be profoundly important for children with special needs, so volunteers installed new sensory decorations and equipment, including the giant bird feeder flower, donated by Strategic Team Group in the garden at Applefields Special School.

At Tang Hall Primary School volunteers created educational and recreational resources in the outdoor spaces used by both the Early Years Unit and Tang Hall Squirrels, who care for under-fives all year round.  Volunteers created new nature zones, upgraded the reading area by installing a new giant storytelling chair, also donated by Strategic Team Group, and carvings.  New vegetable and flower beds, murals and bike paths and train areas were also created by the team.

Jacqui Tesselment, Manager of York Cares, said:  “In the space of just six weeks, we have seen a groundswell of activity, with nearly 100 volunteers pledging their time, companies pledging materials and cash and employees freely sharing their expertise. It is really heartening particularly in the difficult financial climate.”

Deputy Head of Tang Hall Primary School, Bev Pawson added:  “We can’t believe it! The children are going to be so excited when they see their new look play areas, particularly the outdoor story telling chairs.”
