Strategic Team Group Celebrate Decade of Building Success

Property solutions contractor, Strategic Team Group, celebrates its 10th anniversary in April and reveals the completion of thousands of building triumphs from affordable new homes, new schools, new railway stations and refurbishment projects to £100,000 worth of charity donations.

To mark the milestone the firm has committed to raising a further £100,000 for charity, through a series of fundraising events in aid of The Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract, which cares for adults with progressive illnesses offering specialist respite, terminal and palliative care.

From a start-up business in 2000, the firm has developed organically into one of the UK’s fastest growing suppliers of building property services, with a current workforce of over 230, offices in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Scotland and an annual turnover of £40 million.

Strategic Team Group was set up by operations director, Gary Taylor, business development director, Charles Tweed and managing director, Andy Watson in 2000 with £150,000 secured working capital and the aim of developing a Strategic brand across all disciplines of the construction industry.  After quickly achieving the goal, the team re-positioned the business to concentrate on geographic expansion in core service deliveries – new build, refurbishment, minor works and maintenance.

Instrumental in the businesses start up and success, accountant and former PKF adviser to the firm, Ian Bowness joined the board as financial director in 2007.  In 2008, a shareholder reconstruction of the business worth over £11 million funded by Barclays Ventures, released additional resources for organic growth and acquisitions.  The same year saw key appointments to the board, including non-executive chairman, Stuart Black, director for Scotland, Stuart Mason and former joiner, Andrew Coates who rose through the ranks from contracts manager and construction manager was appointed construction director.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the firm has made the bold step of committing to raise £100,000 over the next two years for The Prince of Wales Hospice, through a series of events ranging from a charity jail and bail event in early April, where volunteers will be publically arrested and locked in a prison cell until they have raised bail money through donations from friends, family and colleagues, to a charity masquerade ball at Harewood House, Leeds in October.

Andy Watson, Strategic Team Group’s managing director is proud of what the company has achieved, commenting:
“In just one decade we have reached some major milestones, from restoring landmark buildings to their former glory to building the UK’s first Cyclepoint at Leeds station.  Along the way we have built strong relationships with our clients ranging from registered social landlords to train operating companies and local councils.  We have succeeded despite the difficult economic climate and are fortunate that we are still in a position to create new job opportunities.

“Looking to our future, we have firm plans to build on the success through acquisitions and we are already actively looking for opportunities in the north west, north east, Yorkshire and Scotland.  These acquisitions will help us achieve our target of £100 million turnover over the next two years, whilst maintaining profit margins.”

Strategic Team Group specialises in social and affordable housing, transport, government (education and public buildings), care homes and health facilities, commercial office fit-outs and high profile residential schemes and prides itself on delivering service excellence.  Offering the same level of commitment, expertise and service whether the project is a simple £100 maintenance repair or a £4million new build.  The firm also places great importance on the wellbeing of its people and their ongoing personal and professional development has been the backbone of the firm’s success.

Furthermore, Strategic Team Group is a huge supporter of local charities, often influenced by the experiences of members of the team.  Over the last five years alone, the firm has raised over £20,000 for the Child Brain Injury Trust, £20,000 for the Meningitis Research Foundation, £22,000 for Cancer Research and £30,000 for the British Heart Foundation.  The firm’s commitment to raise £100,000 for The Prince of Wales Hospice is already well under way, with £30,000 already donated.  In addition, the firm is passionate about nurturing young talent, whether it be in the sporting arena or in a professional capacity, sponsoring rising British tennis star, Peter Ashley, junior football teams and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Matrics Yorkshire & Humber.
