WINNER Sustainability project of the year
We were delighted to have built the first ECO station in the UK on the Northern Rail network for Lancashire County Council at Accrington, as part of the EU funded Interreg IVB Sustainable Stations Project, the creation of a new generation of sustainable, low carbon railway stations.
The scheme involved the innovative use of products and services that are sustainable and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Where possible, we used locally sourced and recycled materials such as local stone as well as materials that can be recycled in the future.
The site is on Paxton Street in Accrington, adjacent to the old railway station which remained fully operational throughout. The project also includes solar PV panels, solar heated water and rainwater harvesting for use in the public and staff toilets.
"Strategic Team Group are committed to delivering an outstanding service and showed a real understanding of working in a railway environment."
Richard Watts, Lancashire County Council
Highlights
The project was recognised at the annual Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyor's (RICS) North West Awards, winning Sustainability project of the year. The station has now been automatically entered into the national RICS Awards, competing against other leading projects from across the UK.
The project was nominated in the Environmental Excellence category at the National Rail Awards 2011.
