NOMINATED Project of the Year
A combined new build and refurbishment project to create the first Cyclepoint in the UK at Leeds Station
We were delighted to be the main contractor for the UK's first Cyclepoint for Northern Rail at Leeds station. The Cyclepoint will give rail passengers and city centre cyclists a new option to start and continue their journey by bike.
The two-storey structure provides secure, fully manned storage for over 300 bicycles and includes maintenance and repair services, bike and accessory sales, bike rental and cycling information and demonstration.
The project is based on the successful Dutch concept, brought to the UK by Abellio, joint owner of Northern Rail. Northern Rail and Abellio are leading the project in partnership with the Department for Transport, Network Rail and Metro.
Leeds was chosen as the ideal location for the UK's first Cyclepoint. Use of cycles in Leeds city centre has doubled over the past decade, and continues to increase. Plans are already in place to introduce radial cycling routes from the suburbs into the city centre by 2011. Leeds station has also been selected as a pilot for the Department for Transport's station travel planning initiative.
The scheme forms part of a larger programme to transform UK railway stations into cycling hubs.
The project was nominated in the Project of the Year category at the National Rail Awards 2011.
