The first National Stations Improvement Programme project in the UK
Client: Merseyrail
Value: £1.8m
Duration: 30 weeks
Location: Ormskirk Station, Lancashire
Regional office: Stockport
This £1.8m refurbishment programme was the first Department for Transport NSIP project in the UK and combined the careful restoration of this historic Grade II listed railway station with the modernisation of passenger facilities.
Keeping as close as possible to its original architecture, the station gets its green credentials by using a system that harvests rainwater. This is used in the staff toilet and in the two new public toilets, one of which is fully accessible to people with disabilities.
The station also saves energy by using LED lighting, improved levels of thermal insulation and under floor heating. Station security has also been upgraded with an enhanced CCTV system that now covers the entire station.
