Strategic Team Group saddle up for epic charity

Sixteen big hearted, cycling enthusiasts from one of the UK's fastest growing building contractors, Castleford based Strategic Team Group, are gearing up for the mammoth Bone Cancer Research Trust's first Belgium to Berlin Cycle Challenge, set to take place between 15th - 17th May 2009.

The cycle challenge, the first to be organised by the charity, will see four teams of four riders from Strategic Team Group, aptly named, Strategic Spokes, taking part in the 540 mile cycle relay from Ghent in Belgium to Berlin in just three days. The journey will take the riders from Belgium, through Holland and into Germany, through national parks and rolling hills towards the final destination of Berlin. The riders will work in rotation, each completing approximately 50 - 60 miles a day, with four of the team who are more accomplished riders, including managing director, Andy Watson, completing a gruelling 120 miles per day.

The team have already started intensive training and have the added benefit of being mentored by Pontefract based, elite British cyclist, Ashley Brown of Sportscover Cycling Team, who has advised them on training targets, diet and nutrition.

The event will kick off Strategic Team Group's fundraising activity for the new financial year to raise funds for The Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract, which cares for adults with progressive illnesses offering specialist respite, terminal and palliative care. Setting a target of £15,000, which will be split equally between The Prince of Wales Hospice and race organisers, Bone Cancer Research Trust, the company has already raised £8,500 through sponsorship deals from its suppliers. With Anchor Vehicle Hire providing a Mercedes Sprinter van, which will transport the road bikes and other sponsors including Merseyrail, ASC Technical Support, MNB Partnership Quantity Surveyors, risk management provider Jardine Lloyd Thompson, SAR Signs, Albion Electrical, Accent Regeneration, The Orthodontics Centre in Doncaster and NPS.

Commenting on the challenge which lies ahead, team captain and Strategic Team Group managing director, Andy Watson said:

"We initially had reservations about participating in the event, with our greatest concern being whether we would be able to secure sponsorship from our suppliers, particularly during the current economic climate. However, we have been overwhelmed by the level of generosity from so many of the businesses we work with. Although we are in a recession, it's important to remember that there are still people in dire need of support and care".

"As a business we understand how important it is to be at the top of the game and that requires a fit and healthy work force. This challenge to date has already made dramatic differences to the health and wellbeing of team and we've still got six weeks of training left."
