All aboard for completion of £3.1 million Swansea

The much anticipated new Swansea High Street station has been officially unveiled following its £3.1 million makeover by construction firm, Strategic Team Group. The revamp was part of the Department for Transport's National Station Improvement Programme, which is being jointly led by Arriva Trains Wales, Network Rail and the Welsh Government.

The firm started work on refurbishing the station, which dates back to 1850, in September 2010. The 21 month project, which saw minimal disruption to passengers, included installing new canopies over the platforms and a new canopy over the station's main entrance. A glass screen wall has been built to cut draughts on the station concourse and allow more natural daylight into the building. Ticket barriers have been introduced as well as the construction of a two new buildings inside the station's circulating area, including a Customer Information Pod. Digital information boards, new waiting rooms and toilets, improved safety due to increased CCTV cameras and new open vistas, make the whole travel experience far more pleasant and appealing for passengers. Additional space has also been added for cyclists to store their bikes, a new ticket office built and the station frontage cleaned.

Commenting on the completion of the project, Strategic Team Group's business development director, Charles Tweed said:

"The much improved new station will help give the 1.6 million annual passengers, a welcome befitting the status of a station that is one of the key gateways into the city. The completion of such a prestigious scheme is without doubt, one of the highlights of the year for us."

Mike Bagshaw, commercial director for Arriva Trains Wales said;

"The new station will have a positive impact on local people in the community using the station for work or leisure journeys. Tourists will receive a welcoming first impression as they arrive to explore Swansea and the surrounding areas. We expect that the new station will also play its part in promoting Swansea as a place to do business and generate employment.

"We were pleased to deliver this important project alongside our partners and will continue to work to deliver other projects and unlock further funding to improve stations elsewhere on our network."
