The project included a refurbished concourse with new passenger facilities, improved circulation and waiting areas, as well as retail and catering units. Pre-patinated copper was used to create a clear difference between the new and the old.
Pupils between 4 and 11 years were invited to enter a poster competition to highlight the dangers of building sites and railways. The three winning posters, designed by pupils from Oldfield Primary School were displayed on hoardings around the site. Each received book vouchers and the school received a cheque for £250.

The project received 'Highly Commended' for Station of the Year (Medium) category at the National Rail Awards 2011.
