School pupils spread building site & rail safety messages at Accrington's new eco station

School pupils spread building site & rail

Accrington's new eco station builders, Strategic Team Group, is displaying the design work of local school pupils in a bid to highlight the dangers associated with railways and building sites. Over 40 posters, designed by pupils from Hyndburn Park Primary School, are currently being displayed on the 200 metre hoarding around the site, as work continues on the new eco station, which is set to open in July.

Part of an initiative with East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership, pupils from Hyndburn Park Primary School aged between seven and eight years visited the railway station during the early stages of the construction process and where introduced to the importance of building site and rail safety. After a guided tour, led by Brian Haworth, community rail development officer and Strategic Team Group site manager Neil Waterhouse, the pupils were tasked with creating impactful posters to highlight safe working procedures and illustrate the danger of trespassing on the tracks and that the railway is not a playground.

Commenting on the poster displays, Strategic Team Group's business development director, Charles Tweed said:

"Safety on our sites is a huge issue for us, so we are delighted that local school children have put their creative caps on to design thought provoking posters which will drive the safety message home to all involved in the construction Accrington's new eco station."

The new eco station, which is set to open in July, is being constructed by Yorkshire based building contractors, Strategic Team Group, on behalf of station managers, Northern Rail. The new station, worth £1.2M, will benefit from sustainable, energy efficient and reduced carbon dioxide emissions and will be constructed using, where possible, locally sourced materials including recycled stone and materials that can be recycled if the building is dismantled in the future. Funding for the new station is split between Lancashire County Council and the European Regional Development Fund through the SusStations (Sustainable Stations) project which is funded by the Interreg IVB programme.
