School Pupils Spread Building Site & Railway Safety Messages At Chester Station

Jul 6, 2010
School Pupils Spread Building Site & Railway

The building contractor responsible for the refurbishment of Chester station, Strategic Team Group, is displaying the design work of three school pupils in a bid to highlight the dangers associated with building sites and railways. The three winning posters, designed by pupils from Oldfield Primary School in Vicars Cross, are currently being displayed on ten metre hoarding around the site, as work continues to improve the station, which is set for completion in August.

Pupils aged between four and 11 years from Oldfield Primary School were invited to enter a competition to design posters to promote safe working procedures on building sites, including the importance of wearing personal protective equipment and illustrate the danger of trespassing on railway property.

With over 70 entries, the difficult task of selecting the three winners, who include in first place Oliver Brunskill, second Jessica Dunning and third Maggie Corr all aged between eight and ten years, was down to transport operator, Arriva Trains Wales. Each received book vouchers and the school received a cheque for £250 to go towards school funds.

Commenting on the poster displays, Strategic Team Group's business development director, Charles Tweed said:

"Safety on our sites is a huge issue for us, so we are delighted that local school children have put their creative caps on to design thought provoking posters which will drive the safety message home to all involved in the refurbishment of Chester station."

Oldfield Primary School headteacher, Mr Phil Choi added:

"We are proud to support this exciting project enabling our pupils to display their artistic talents as well as helping to reinforce the safety messages that are taught in school."

Strategic Team Group is currently carrying out £1.7 million worth of building work to the station on behalf of Arriva Trains Wales. The works comprise of the demolition of the central pavilion to construct a new passenger waiting area, retail units and Arriva Trains Wales train crew facilities at platforms 4 to 7, plus a new staircase. With funds from the Department of Transport backed National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP), Network Rail, Heritage Trust, Mersey Travel, Chester Renaissance, Cheshire West and Chester, Lottery Funding, Investors England North West and the North West Regional Development Agency.
