Health & Safety

It is our priority to provide the safest working environment for our team, subcontractors, visitors to our sites and members of the public.

We ensure that all of our team fully understand the part they play in maintaining our high safety standards, and the importance of Health and Safety is reinforced with a structured training regime and a rigorous site safety audit structure.

Annual safety training updates are provided for all team members, and changes in legislation or company policy are transmitted to all our employees at Site Inductions, Toolbox Talks and Safety Notices, enabling us to distribute detailed information and advice on best working practice throughout the company.

Our safety team is made up of a full-time, qualified HSQE Manager plus a Construction Health & Safety Manager. The team carries out regular site inspections and audits, safety training and accident investigations, as well as liaising with Local Authorities, the HSE and advising on risk assessments and method statements.

Strategic Team Group is committed to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and we are working towards all site operatives being card holders by January 2009.

Recent initiatives we have implemented include:

  • A ‘Don’t Walk Past’ campaign on all sites encouraging reporting of near miss incidents.
  • Training of site management to carry out scaffold inspections.
  • A company-wide programme, ‘Project Charlie’, promoting safety awareness and accident prevention, encouraging employees to carry out ‘Last Minute Risk Assessments’ and to remember that ‘If you cannot do it safely, DON’T DO IT!’

Project Charlie is a programme derived from an industry safety-promotion DVD, a poignant reminder of how accidents can have a devastating effect on so many lives - colleagues, family and friends and how Health & Safety means thinking about yourself and others.

As part of our ongoing commitment to our safety policy, by the end of 2008, all subcontractors will have to meet the requirements of Contractor Plus – a robust Health & Safety vetting system.
