This project involved new build alteration works, kitchen & bathroom refurbishments and window replacements at on-campus student accommodation, owned by the University of York. The scheme included works to 260 bedrooms, 26 communal kitchens and three bathrooms at the St Lawrence Court development; despite the large scale of the project, we completed all works within 10 weeks.
STG was contracted to carry out new build and structural alteration works to extend existing residential provision and improve fire safety measures. We reconfigured two adjacent houses of ten bedrooms into one house of 20 bedrooms, with works including the removal of an existing spiral staircase and party wall and the construction of a traditional staircase to improve means of escape from the first and second floors. We also completed the full strip-out of existing fixtures and fittings and replacement with new, along with final finishes.
At ground floor level, we performed structural improvement works including new pile foundations and a steel 'goalpost' supporting structure to support a section of the first floor. The buildings were also redecorated in accordance with the Client's specification.
The buildings were unoccupied during the works but we were required to manage interactions with the operation of the University and surrounding area. Various other contractors were working on other projects within the grounds of the University during the construction period and we co-ordinated all works smoothly, avoiding any disruption or interference with other activities.
