Paul Dutton - quantity surveyor
Before joining Strategic Team Group I’d spent 10 years as a joiner/shopfitter and had reached the point where I needed a new challenge. I started in 2008 as an assistant quantity surveyor and was responsible for carrying out valuations and payment applications for the maintenance department. Gradually as my knowledge and experience increased, I started to complete pricing quotes and minor works tenders for existing clients.
Within a couple of years, I’d progressed to supervising a team to carry out invoicing, and took commercial responsibility for the maintenance department, until the team could be further strengthened to enable me to fill a role within the main contracts quantity surveying team. I’m now a quantity surveyor and am in my final year of studying part-time for a Bsc (Hons) (RICS) in quantity surveying at Leeds Metropolitan University. I’m really looking forward to graduating, not only as I’m on track for a 2:1 all being well, but so I can get back to playing rugby on a regular basis and spending more time on the race track on my motorbike, I’m a bit of a petrol head!
Whilst my academic goal is to successfully complete my degree, I’m also looking forward to delivering on time and on budget, a £5 million, special needs educational project in Tewkesbury, in August. The whole experience has been hugely beneficial for my own personal development and is a scheme that I will no doubt be proud of, for years to come.
Commenting on Paul’s progress, Strategic Team Group’s operations director, Gary Taylor added: “We place the utmost importance on professional development and actively encourage our team to achieve academically. We expose our teams to a robust diet of training, coupled with real hands-on experience in the construction field.
“Paul has shown real character and determination in completing his studies, and we are all confident he will reach his full potential in both the academic and construction arenas.”
