Matthew Miller - apprentice plasterer
As a direct result of becoming a plastering apprentice and being awarded distinctions from Leeds College of Building in his NVQ Diploma Levels 1, 2 & 3, I have now set my sights on eventually becoming a site manager.
My career with Strategic Team Group started at aged 16 years, when I was appointed as a site labourer by operations director, Gary Taylor, who then went on to encourage me to enrol at Leeds College of Building. The next three years saw me complete my apprenticeship as a plasterer, through a day release and block release programme. With just 18 months under my belt as a fully qualified plasterer, I have now set himself yet another goal, to complete a site management course.
As a fully qualified plasterer, I am currently working on projects for social housing provider, Yorkshire Housing, in Selby, York, Bradford, Sheffield and Leeds. I'm also putting my skills to the test on my own home, which I purchased last year, and I'm completely renovating before I moves in.
Strategic Team Group have been so supportive and have encouraged me to achieve. In fact, I've enjoyed the experience so much, I hope that in the future perhaps I can help train other young apprentices as they come on board. I've got my head set on completing the site management course, so I need to keep demonstrating that I'm dedicated and committed to achieving.
Commenting on Matthew's achievements, Strategic Team Group's operations director, Gary Taylor said:
"Apprenticeships offer huge benefits for businesses and individuals, and play a key role in building the skilled workforce that our business needs.
"We are all extremely proud of Matthew and his willingness to learn. As a result of the apprenticeship, not only has he become a skilled plasterer, he's gained confidence and earned the respect he deserves from his colleagues. We will continue to support him in his ambitions to become a site manager in the not too distant future."
