Craig Hammond - apprentice plumber
I've always had an interest in plumbing because my dad worked as a pipe fitter and heating engineer, so I was introduced to plumbing at a very early age. I'm studying plumbing at North Glasgow College while serving an apprenticeship with Strategic Team Group. I have been named Apprentice of the Year in my first, second and third years.
I really enjoy my apprenticeship, it's a great way to learn. I can study the theory in class and then get the practical experience in the workplace. I've also had a great mentor, Kenny Latta, who has guided me and encouraged me all the way. Winning the award has really encouraged me to pursue my career and do well.
I get to work on a variety of projects from reactive maintenance repairs to major projects like the project in Clydebank, Glasgow where I installed several new kitchens in Caspian House as part of a major £130,000 refurbishment for Scottish National Heritage.
I have also been instrumental in the implementation of new technology within my team, it's great to be able to contribute and to be appreciated for my efforts.
I'm very particular about everything I do and have very high standards and expectations. Because of my high standards, it can on occassion mean that a job takes a little longer than planned, but it's all about getting it right.
